My Weekend with The Sherman Market

    June 22, 2017

Last month, Cate Kenny, owner of the Sherman Lofts and creator of the Sherman Market invited me to check out her new concept in Salida, Colorado. How could I say no? So we packed up our mountain bikes and drove the 140 miles from Denver to the quaint mountain town on the banks of the Arkansas River.

Located in the courtyard of the historic Sherman Hotel, a converted brick building in the heart of Salida’s quaint downtown, the market plays host to a variety of Colorado makers, ranging from jewelry creators to outdoor apparel companies. Upon arriving in the sleepy town (which was, incidentally, not-so-sleepy this particular weekend, thanks to FibArk festivities), I was immediately drawn to the open, airy marketplace.

For a market in its first year, I have to say I was more than impressed. The vendors were well-organized and Cate did an excellent job of curating the market. The market’s coolness complements Salida’s artistic atmosphere and outdoor recreation scene. Furthermore, live music acts played throughout the night, which contributed to the warm, lively atmosphere.

I also had the opportunity to stay in the Sherman Lofts for two nights, which are owned by Cate and her husband. The lofts are comprised of three apartment-style units that overlook both the courtyard and Tenderfoot Mountain (or, as the locals call it, S-Mountain). With exposed brick, new appliances, and a Western-inspired mix of eclectic and vintage decor—including some of Cate’s artwork—the lofts made me feel I was staying in a home away from home.

Each weekend will feature different vendors, which gives locals a chance to refresh between visits. This also provides new vendors an opportunity for exposure, which is rare in most markets that only last one or two weekends. The atmosphere, the vendors, and the little details in decor are what makes this market unique—and one that I’ll be returning to again next year.

Here’s a sneak peek into the vendors that I got to meet.

Owner Lisa’s brilliant jewelry creations use natural elements like wood, but with a modern twist. Her designs are architectural with varying geometric lines as the base. She has a mix of both minimal and statement pieces.

    Kompass Apparel

Owner Kynsi started this company with a love for athletic clothing and design. Her designs start with her creating the graphics and then handing them off to a local shop for screen printing. The t-shirts are so comfortable and would be great for anything from a hike to a Barre class.

    Mountain Time Soap

Boasting all-natural ingredients and amazing smells, these soaps and bath soaks would make great gifts for the home. Owner Stacy really knows her stuff when it comes to ingredients and her husband makes beautiful hand carved soap dishes to accompany her soaps.

The Sherman Market is a welcome addition to a city that’s built on community and culture. Combined with the town’s endless rafting, mountain biking, and hiking options, the Sherman Market makes Salida the perfect summer destination—and its adjoining lofts serve as the perfect basecamp for adventure.

Running from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until the first weekend of August, the Sherman Market is an opportunity to meet people doing cool things and spend time exploring one of my favorite (and, not to mention, hippest) mountain towns in Colorado.

    Until next time,
